With less than 100 days to go until the Commonwealth Games 2014 kick off in Glasgow, preparations are ongoing at Hampden Park, set to form centre-stage for this year’s athletic events. But in fact, the whole of Scotland has been gearing up for this sporting milestone since the bid was won back in 2007, with a huge range of industries from catering to security to the all-important construction receiving a welcome boost. Add to this epic preparations like the Queen’s Baton Relay and there are countless ways to get involved.
Work at the Games
The Scottish jobs sector has been given a welcome shot in the arm by the Commonwealth Games, with schemes like the Commonwealth Graduate Fund creating more opportunities for Scotland’s university leavers and the Culture 2014 events programme boosting the creative industry country-wide.
For those who still want to get involved, new vacancies are cropping up all the time, and not just in the hospitality roles that you might expect.
The appointment of Sunset+Vine and Global Television as Official Host Broadcasters has created hundreds of broadcasting roles, in all aspects from camera work to rigging, lighting and being a runner behind the scenes. From reporting on the Baton Relay to sharing those euphoric medal moments, digital will no doubt be a big part of this year’s action, and you will also find roles in social media and reporting are in demand at the moment.
Many sectors also require trainers and supervisory roles, such as training security workers in preparation for the Games, and managing a team while the events are taking place. There are also more organisational roles in arranging transport for athletes to and from the events.
Of course, the catering industry in Glasgow is enjoying a flood of openings in front of house sales and chef positions, while some managerial roles are also based elsewhere in cities such as Dundee.
If you fancy being in the midst of the buzz and applying for the latest roles at Glasgow 2014, keep your eye on the Commonwealth Games recruiter profile on s1jobs.
The volunteer register has now closed, but there you can still keep tabs on the build-up to the Games. The Queen’s Baton Relay has entered the last leg of its 288-day world tour, as crowds from Commonwealth territories across the world have welcomed the official baton since its launch from Buckingham Palace last October. Follow its progress online and on Twitter as it nears the Scottish stage of the tour, starting on 14th June, when you’ll be able to watch batonbearers from Edinburgh to the Outer Hebrides take the flame.
The Culture 2014 collaboration between the Commonwealth committee and local arts organisations in Scotland has also been getting the entire country involved in everything from social dances at the Glasgow Barrowlands to mini art exhibitions in the Orkneys, as well as the annual programme of globally-recognised festivals like Glasgow Film Festival and Edinburgh International Festival.
So there’s really no chance of ignoring this monumental occasion – the only question is, come July 23rd, where will you be watching from?
