Hammer time: make a bid for success

Be honest now; most of us have ‘accidentally tuned into’ Homes Under the Hammer and been sucked into the drama of this nail-biting TV show. It’s sure to remain a national pastime, even if presenter Lucy Alexander has just announced she’s stepping down.

While we’re all familiar with the banging of a hammer and a scary person with peer-over spectacles shouting: “Sold to the lady with the red sombrero!” much of the work of an auction house is actually done behind the scenes.

Let’s find out more.

The Apprentice

When you’re starting out in the property jobs sector, specialist qualifications can be gained at university or through part-time or distance learning courses – such as the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers or the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.

Starting salaries are between £20,000 and £26,000 and hours around 37 a week, although you won’t necessarily be working 9-5 if you land a gig in auctions, as many take place on evenings or at weekends.

The Property Lister and Valuer

The role of property lister involves carrying out a valuation of the property, or land, organising photographs and producing schedules – the glossy brochures containing all the details of the sale.

Valuers are usually qualified surveyors who specialise in this field.

As you’re likely to spend a lot of time visiting commercial and residential properties over a large area, a driving licence is usually a must. Welly boots too.

The Auctioneer

Now it really is hammer time. As well as managing the auction sale, an auctioneer must also market it to attract bidders. Some auctioneers will also carry out the duties of a property valuer.

You’ll need a voice louder than Granny Ina’s winning bingo shout and a confident nature – remember all eyes will be on you.

Being good with numbers is essential too: no-one wants to find their winning bid has a surprise zero at the end.

The Management

Such is the attraction of working for an auction house, once you’ve been accepted into the business, many people make a life-long career of it.

While some like the cut and thrust of the auction room, there’s also the option to move into management and oversee the entire business operation.
