What would you say to a job that provided you with no office, no canteen, no colleagues (actually that last one could be a blessing some mornings) – but left you instead to find your own space to work and just get on with it?
Welcome to the future of Sales!
It might not be for everyone but for an ever increasing number of us the idea of being chained to an office desk and forced to stay put from 9am until 5pm five days a week is looking increasingly outmoded and, quite frankly, unwanted.
Home is were the heart is!
Everyone’s at it. Richard Branson has made no secret of the fact his workplace is a hammock on his very own Virgin Island.
And Christian Mischler, the boss of an on-line company that sells hotels rooms in Asia and Australia, has revealed he spends 250 days of the year travelling around the world, running his business from bars, hotels, beaches and even ski resorts – and, yes, he encourages his employees to do exactly the same. Lucky so-and-so’s!
All that matters to these movers and shakers is that the job gets done on time and with great results.
Let’s face it: traditional working environments and office hours in this country were established during the Victorian era – they were designed to get men out of the house and set in stone to suit train timetables.
While feminism jemmied open the workplace, sadly, the coming of the motor car did little to change steam-engined office hours.
But now the internet has opened up new possibilities . . . and it is sales staff who have most to gain from the immense freedom the new ways of working can offer.
Because this isn’t just about where you work; this brave new world also challenges us to be more effective in a much shorter period of time.
Does it really matter if you put in just three hours a day as an Outbound Sales Advisor, so long as you hit your sales targets?
And, if you are more productive late at night than first thing in the morning, why not abandon those early starts altogether?
How effective a more relaxed regime will be depends ultimately, of course, not so much on how it suits you, but whether or not it meets the needs of your customers.
If you are a Sales Representative selling the sort of product that involves meeting clients face-to-face, then you’ll have less flexibility about where and when you do business.
Here on s1jobs.com there are also frequent vacancies for Field Sales Representatives who are already partially unplugged from the office system, tasked with selling to clients on the road and on the phone.
While their clients are still wedded to traditional office hours then their freedom to choose their own working hours will remain limited.
However, if other business sectors begin to loosen their grip on where and when they do business then that ‘Field’ could stretch to anywhere and any time in the world that has a fast internet connection and a signal for a mobile phone.
So, my friends, it’s time to kick back and kick ass.
