The Golden Age Index by PwC measures how effectively countries make use of the economic power of workers aged over 55.
Iceland looks cool in the top spot, Sweden came fourth but the UK ranked a lowly 19th out of 34 countries.
There is, however, growing recognition of the value of these workers.
Dr Jill Miller, diversity and inclusion adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, is encouraging employers to make the most of what older and experienced workers have to offer, commenting: “Many have a wealth of knowledge and are at the top of their game. HR is, of course, at the heart of making the changes that would allow companies to accommodate their needs.

Financial aid
Offering support in the event an employee falls ill can make the decision to join a company much easier for anyone potentially more prone to health problems linked with age.
Health support
Having access to occupational health services will also help lessen potential concerns and allow the HR team to make any necessary adjustments in the workplace.
Flexibility
More flexible working hours and the option of a shorter working week.
Promoted posts
