Wimbledon saw some marathon tennis matches take place this month. Perhaps most gruelling of all was the epic battle between Kevin Anderson and John Isner.
This was the longest semi-final in Wimbledon history and ended with Anderson winning after more than six-and-a-half hours of play in the searing heat.
The final set alone lasted for two hours and 50 minutes.
To stay the pace at this level of sport means being at the top of your game. It also takes incredible stamina.
The same can be said of the world of HR, where assistants and managers must be on form – not just for a day or a week but throughout the business year.
So how do top HR pros build and maintain their staying power?
Pace yourself
A marathon runner doesn’t set off like Usain Bolt being chased by a cheetah: they run at a strong yet steady pace, knowing there are many miles ahead to be conquered.
Similarly, an HR assistant should not try to do twice the required work one week then spend the next watching cats playing the piano on Facebook.
A sure and steady approach is the most effective way to get the job done.
Train regularly
To compete successfully at Wimbledon the top players train regularly. The equivalent for an HR pro is to continually upskill and to try new approaches to employee engagement and company growth.
Train regularly and you’ll soon be a contender for that top job as HR Director.
Reward yourself
Celebrating successes can give you an instant energy boost. And these don’t have to be huge achievements.
Those little victories such as a finished ‘to do’ list, a productive appraisal with an employee or a day that ends without a staff complaint landing in your inbox – all of these should be recognised as a job well done and signs you’re making a difference.
Take a break
Even Kevin Anderson and John Isner were allowed to take time out for a breather and top up on water and energy bars.
In the fast-paced word of HR it can tempting to work through the whole day without taking a much needed break.
But this is not sustainable. Taking time out to clear the mind, enjoying fresh air or eating healthy food will bring you fresh focus and will be more productive in the long term.
