If you want to work in admin, you’re going to have to accept becoming a VIP . . . yes, a Very Important Person.
This isn’t because your company car will be a stretch limo and a red carpet will roll all the way to your desk.
No it’s because you’ll be a highly dependable professional upon whom a company relies to keep its business running smoothly and everyone else working together as efficiently as possible.
Of course, before you can be awarded VIP status, you must first go through the admin equivalent of I’m A Celebrity: the interview.
To help you succeed we’ve compiled a list of some of the most commonly asked admin interview questions – and the answers to make you a star.
How do you stay calm and focussed in busy periods?
By being organised, logging new requests and every task I complete so nothing is missed. Also keeping a strict diary takes potential stress out of deadlines.
If I see there may be logjams or delays ahead, I’ll flag this up with my manager and work on prioritising.
How do you deal with authority?
Respect, politeness, professionalism and a sense of humour are all key to working with authority – they also create an enjoyable work environment. If I did have any concerns, I’d speak to my manager so that together we could resolve the situation before it can escalate.
What are your strengths and weaknesses? (oh yes, that one!)
The ability to multitask is definitely one of my strong suits. I also enjoy the challenge of meeting tight deadlines. If it’s a weakness, I can’t stand mess and I find it stressful – so if I see a disorganised work schedule or a poorly managed diary, I always feel the need to help sort it straight away.
Do you enjoy interacting with people?
Yes, I enjoy meeting people. I appreciate there are times when I’ll be liaising closely with colleagues and meeting new clients or visitors in the office, but I’m confident at communicating.
Finally, why are you the best person for his job?
I have a combination of technical and communication skills, which means I can match the talents you’re looking. I can also see myself continually developing these skills and becoming even more valuable to your company.
