Job descriptions: what’s in a name?

Iceland has called. It wants its name back and now Britain’s biggest frozen food chain is embroiled in a war of words with the nation that gave us Bjork.

It turns out our favourite purveyor of fish fingers and frozen peas holds the trademark for the name. This means companies who really are from the island in the far North Atlantic are stymied as how to describe themselves.

No doubt relations between company and country will eventually thaw (sorry!), but not before the publicity has sent more customers to Iceland for frozen Yorkshire Puddings and holidaymakers booking flights to Reykjavik: a win-win situation.

So what’s in a name? It’s hard to believe anyone would confuse a shop with an entire country, but you never know – so we checked out some of the almost 200 retail vacancies on s1jobs to find out if some titles require more explanation than others.

Satellite Retail Manager

This doesn’t involve selling duty free on the International Space Station. Instead it involves providing managerial support to a chain of stores right across Scotland. With this top retail job comes an opportunity for flexible working. Sorry, a space rocket is not included but you do get a company car.

E-Commerce Merchandiser

In their traditional role, merchandisers visit stores to push their product, getting it the best spot on the shelf and setting up eye-catching displays to outshine their rivals.

In the on-line world they manage the product web pages, aim to outdo competitors on pricing and keep on top of sales figures. So more of the same, but different.

Dealer Principal

This isn’t an opening for a top card shuffler in a casino but for a big boss in the world of car sales. Selling cars is big business and for determined job seekers it can offer big rewards.

Internal Sales Assistant

Calm down, this has nothing to do with selling human organs! It involves dealing with customers who come direct to the warehouse or factory. No medical expertise is necessary, just a sound knowledge of products and services.

Field Sales Consultant

Can you tell a rye grass from a fine fescue? We’re only kidding; you don’t have to because this vacancy is not restricted to farming types. Instead it’s for a sales executive who travels to see their customers.

So if you love being on the open road and meeting people, this is the retail job for you.
