Why kindness matters in the workplace

When was the last time you did something kind at work? If you’re pausing to think about it, it was far too long ago.

Circles20181005_Smallmanufacturing1We’re not talking about the random acts of kindness that make headlines but the mundane ones: holding a lift door for someone, taking someone’s dirty cup to the kitchen or sending a thank you note for a job well done.

Such acts have the power to make the working day more meaningful and effective – and there’s nowhere better to start than in the production and manufacturing sector.

Let’s face it, working with the same colleagues for eight hours-plus isn’t always easy – and that’s before you get on the factory floor.

But you don’t have to wait for national Kindness Day UK in November to do something nice for your colleagues.

Here at s1jobs we’ve got come up easy ways to make your workplace kinder – and more productive – right now.

Bring in biscuits

This is the easiest and most common act of kindness in the workplace.

You don’t have to be Mary Berry either. There’s nothing like home baking – even misshapen or soggy-bottomed – to bring your co-workers out of their Monday morning funk . . . and get those production lines whirring.

Pass on praise

Be sure to share positive feedback you heard about someone’s work, especially if they weren’t there themselves to hear it first-hand. This isn’t just about massaging egos: motivating your colleagues can also boost business.

You’re on safer ground when compliments are work-related. Certainly don’t offer pregnancy congratulations unless you’re absolutely sure.

Silver service

When you’ve drained the last of the carton, pop out for more milk instead of putting the empty one back in the fridge. Don’t pretend you’ve never done it!

Even better, offer to bring back lunch for a colleague who is feeling under the cosh and can’t leave their post.

Don’t feed the rumour mill

Factory floor gossip can be more engrossing than an omnibus of Emmerdale but it can also be divisive and toxic. Try to put in a good word or a positive comment when others are busy gossiping.

Being a cheerleader for something or someone doesn’t turn you into the workplace sook – instead it can promote better relationships.
