Leonardo’s just the business for Scotland

A-list Hollywood stars visiting Scotland are like buses. You wait ages for one to come along, then around the corner comes another.

Production 1

No sooner had we recovered from the sight of George Clooney walking the streets of Edinburgh,   when we heard the news Leonardo DiCaprio will be attending the Scottish Business Awards in November.

The Oscar winner has accepted an invitation to visit the homeless charity sandwich shop Social Bite in Edinburgh before giving a keynote speech.

Who knows what message DiCaprio, a committed environmentalist and philanthropist, will give to the Scottish business community . . . but we’ve put together a few ideas inspired by his own jobs resume to get him started.

Titanic

The tragic romance set on the ill-fated voyage of the cruise liner has more salt in the cast’s tears than in the Atlantic Ocean.

So what can Leo take from this weepy?

No matter what obstacles come our way, whether they be icebergs, falling oil revenues or Brexit, Scotland’s manufacturing and production sector can weather them.

Look at our successful food and drink industry: growing sales of pies and pasties alone could keep Scotland afloat.

The Revenant

A fur trapper gets mauled by a bear and spends months crawling through the wilderness.

Leo’s message: take care of those, erm, bear necessities of life and endurance pays off.

The future of Harris Tweed looked bleak a few years ago but a marketing push aimed at a younger generation means its products are now hip and hot.

Wolf of Wall Street

This is the true story of the rise and fall of stockbroker Jordan Belfort.

Leo’s message: Seize opportunities. Belfort knew how to make the most of every chance.

There’s no better illustration of this than entrepreneurs in all businesses. And later this year Entrepreneurial Scotland, in association with Deloitte and s1jobs’ sister organisation The Herald, will celebrate the best at the 2016 Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.

Inception

This thriller is the stuff dreams are made of with an ending that has audiences in a spin. Leo’s message: Dream big, Scotland! We’ve done it before. Our production and manufacturing history is long and proud and everyone, from Project Managers to Machine Operators, should be encouraged to have big ambitions.

The Great Gatsby

Born poor, Gatsby is determined to make it big. Leo’s message: Reinvent yourself. Scotland may have said goodbye to its heavy industries but its found niche markets, such as software development, gaming, and craft beers.
