Always Give a Game Plan

In the famous line from Monty Python: no-one ever expects the Spanish Inquisition. But not knowing what’s expected at an interview or how long it will last can cause trepidation.

Help candidates by revealing beforehand information such as what kind of questions are likely to be asked. You’re much more likely to get the information you need than by blindsiding a person who can’t think straight through stress.

 

Don’t Pile On Extra Pressure

Suddenly announcing mid-interview you’d like the candidate to meet the team and give an impromptu presentation about themselves will usually backfire by causing stress levels to hit the ceiling.

If you really want to evaluate how an applicant performs under pressure, offer hypothetical scenarios and allow enough time for them to think through what they would do.

You are actually the nicest person in the world but if you scowl rather than smile, seem bored rather than interested or have a demeanour that looks more explosive than Malcolm Tucker, who’s going to know it?

Having the correct body language can help candidates pick up on your vibes – and subsequently help them relax.

So while you’re keeping an eye on a potential employee for signs they’re engaged and enthusiastic, don’t forget your own signals can bring a level of productive calm to the interview.
