In primary schools there’s a really important job to be done: teaching the basics on which futures will be built.

Get the foundations right and pupils are off to a great start.

What you have in your favour with children of primary age is their enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

The curriculum has been designed to make the most of this energy, with a mission to turn out confident, creative and accomplished children ready to take on the challenge of secondary education.

Primary schools these days are equipped like NASA, with hi-tech tools as well as all the traditional stuff such as books, crayons and jotters. And many schools have even begun offering exciting lessons in subjects such as music technology.

Much has changed since you were last in a classroom and that’s one of the best reasons for going back to school: the excitement of the new.

On s1jobs you can find vacancies for teachers all across Scotland. You could choose to work in a large inner city school with hundreds of pupils or you may find yourself on a remote island where there are maybe just six or seven on the school roll. In schools such as these you’ll play a vital role in the community as well as in the classroom.

If you want to work in a more remote location, it would be wise to brush up on extra-curricular skills . . . like playing an instrument for all those ceilidhs or fixing generators for when the power goes down.

So how do you get started? Well you’ll need a degree in primary education or in another subject, plus a Professional Graduate Diploma in Education.

You don’t need to be fresh out of college to start down this path. You can train to be a teacher at any age.

And, if you qualified some time ago then took a different route, a refresher course in the classroom will be enough to get you back on track.
