Meet The Expert: Jordan Black

Show all Construction/Trade jobs across Scotland

Jordan Black is the embodiment of the saying ‘learning from the ground up’. Now aged 23, he has been involved in the family business, The Castlecroft Group, since he was 16.

Construction_2Castlecroft Securities Ltd was founded by Alex Wishart and Ian Black, along with Sheena Black, and Jordan is the grandson of Sheena.

Having gained his degree in Business Management and under the mentorship of his granddad, Jordan is being prepared to eventually take the reins of the company.

Can you describe a typical day?

First things first: put the kettle on! Then I’ll check emails and review overnight enquiries for all areas of the group.

Every day is different and I’m still getting used to jumping from one area, such as credit control, to answering queries regarding stock and availability for the construction department or working alongside the MD reviewing accounts and finance.

What are the most enjoyable parts of your job?

I enjoy every day at work whether it’s the finance side, customer service or sales-based work. Being on the frontline, selling our products and bringing in sales really gives me a buzz.

Yesterday I was out delivering toilets to sites, today I’m in the office wearing a tie. I can be doing something different every day but that’s what I like about the job.

What do you look for when recruiting?

We always try to promote existing staff where possible, as they know what the job entails better than anyone.

Recruiting online also helps us source the best people. We’re very much a team and look for enthusiastic people who are in it for the long run.

Our HGV drivers are at the heart of our business, responsible for delivering excellent customer care as well as taking care of equipment and vehicles worth thousands of pounds.

The job requires many skills from map reading to tachograph regulations, to correctly loading and unloading the vehicles.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

That’s easy. I see myself developing my knowledge through training and listening to those who’ve done the job for a long time.

Ian, whom I call granddad, is a great inspiration to me. He’s 72 and doesn’t miss an opportunity for the business and I want to grasp that and move things forward.

As the world changes, I want Castlecroft Group to change and develop too.
