What attracted you to a career in sales?

Media sales is a fast moving, dynamic industry, which really appealed to me as no two days are ever the same.

Meeting and working with different clients is great fun and helping them achieve success is very rewarding.

Where did you study?

I studied Advertising and PR at Glasgow College of Commerce, now the City of Glasgow College.

What was your first job in sales?

My first job in sales was with Real Radio, so I’ve always worked within the media sector and specifically within commercial radio – which is another reason why I wanted to continue my career in the industry.

The industry has seen remarkable changes in the past 20 years. How have you had to adapt to this scale of upheaval?

There’s been a lot of well documented upheaval in print media and television with the dominance of the internet and the arrival of streaming services. This has seen many people migrating online to obtain information and get up to speed with breaking news.

As a result, fewer people are watching live TV, as viewers enjoy the freedom and flexibility that comes with streaming services, allowing them to consume content at their convenience.

That being said, we are very fortunate radio has remained a strong medium over the years and, we have a very loyal listener and client base. I think this is partly down to the fact that radio is a trusted medium that people use to consume their daily news as well as enjoy for leisure.

What is the biggest challenge in radio sales today?

Choice – the digital revolution has brought ever increasing choices for both listeners and clients.

We need to continue to evolve and deliver outstanding quality solutions for our clients to ensure our ongoing success.

Is this still an exciting career for young entrants?

Absolutely! There are still many exciting opportunities for enthusiastic and hardworking young people.

What’s the most important thing you have learned and what advice would you give anyone starting out in their career today?

The most important, so far, is to listen carefully to the needs of your client and offer them effective solutions that help achieve their objectives.

The advice I’d give to someone starting out in their career in sales is to be patient and never give up no matter how hard it gets.

It takes time to build a strong client base and build trust and rapport with your clients and potential clients and there are no short cuts.

Do the right thing by your customers and you will never go wrong.
