Meet the Expert: Nyerere Hamilton

Weddings are big business and the venues that hold them have to compete hard for sales. On s1jobs you’ll find great opportunities to work in this vibrant sector, but what’s it really like?

To find out we talked to Nyerere Hamilton, who is Senior Events Sales Manager at Ingliston Country Club in Renfrewshire.

The Club is a five-star destination with a restaurant, hotel and luxury lodge accommodation, wedding and conference suites . . . oh, and a world-class equestrian facility.

When did you join the sales team?

I joined Ingliston in 2011 after my return to work following maternity and the birth of my daughter. Before that I was an events manager in Glasgow city centre.

So what’s it all about?

My remit includes all those aspects of hospitality at Ingliston that incorporate food and beverage, so that can be everything from a small private luncheon to a large corporate event over several days to a bespoke wedding.

The equestrian programme is a niche market product and has its own manager here at the country club.

The wedding sales market is incredibly competitive. How do you make sure your venue stands out?

Great customer service, quality venues, good value for money and a personal one-to-one relationship are all key to securing customers and ensuring repeat business.

Are you rewarded with a mix of salary and commission?

All businesses reward differently and some offer reduced salaries and pay commission on sales. At Ingliston we are rewarded by salary, which I believe helps us to build wholesome and genuine customer relationships.

Would you describe yourself as target-driven?

I’m naturally motivated to be the best I can be. I take pride in my work and Ingliston is a great place to promote and create events.

For the purposes of market forecasting I do have quarterly and annual targets to meet, which I find helpful and motivating.

What do you most enjoy about the job?

Ingliston is a family-run business focused on the personal touch, which is refreshing compared to corporate brand venues I’ve worked for in the past.

What is the biggest event you’ve handled?

A magnificent marquee wedding created within the grounds for more than 250 guests.

What would your advice be to anyone keen to work in a similar sales position?

Attention to detail is paramount and time management is key.

Finally, do you actually like horses?

I think they’re beautiful and elegant. My daughter is a member of the Pony Club here at Ingliston.
