Meet The Expert: Peter McMenemy

We’ve come a long way from blowing into a conch to announce dinner. Medium-rare brontosaurus served with glacier water, anyone?

Today, the world of IT and Telecommunications can seem mind-bogglingly complex, being inextricably intertwined with huge evolutionary leaps in hardware and software.

So, if you’re considering a career in this sector, professional advice is a must.

That’s why we persuaded Peter McMenemy to take time out to speak to us.

The busy young Scotsman, who is partner of Allolio&Konrad, headquartered in Germany, is one of Europe’s foremost experts in IT and Telecommunications consulting.

So, can Peter pick a perfect potted biog?

I’ll try! I’ve been in the consulting industry for almost 15 years. Most of the work involves helping Europe’s largest telecommunications companies change their business and IT systems.

This makes it easier for them to bring products to market faster and make the customer experience more interactive and intuitive, improving revenue and margins.

How did you get where you are today?

In addition to putting in the hours, what makes a difference in every company are people who do two things: 1. Look for ways to do things differently or to do completely new things; 2. Challenge constructively the current way of doing things (the key word is constructively, not just challenge!).

Is this a vibrant sector to move into?

Yes, indeed. Telecoms has never been more exciting due to the changes we’re seeing now and expecting in the next few years.

We’ve seen each generation of technology and computing leapfrog the last – from the PC overtaking the mainframe to the mobile internet superceding the desktop internet.

This has driven tremendous innovation within the mobile communications industry.

Now we’re on the verge of the next revolution, which will overtake the mobile internet in terms of impact, reach and innovation: Virtual and Augmented Reality.

What’s been your career highlight so far?

Just now we’re entering a new chapter in our company’s history as we agreed at the end of 2016 to be acquired by Ericsson.

Over the past few years Ericsson has been going through an exciting transformation as it sets itself up to compete in the changing telecoms landscape over the next few years. We’re really excited to be part of that.

Top tips for job seekers moving into this sector?

Moving into this sector is relatively straightforward, given the diversity of roles: people can work in IT development, frontline sales, customer service, testing handsets, strategy . . . But small things make a huge difference: so be friendly, be prepared and invest in relationships that matter to you – people do business with people they get on with.
