A brain for maths and science

Becoming a Gas Engineer naturally requires hard work as it’s such a skilled profession. This means you must gain qualifications and experience, go through certified training, and make it on to the gas safe register.

Once qualified, however, a truly successful Gas Engineer will always keep up with the latest technologies and developments in the industry.

 

Hands-on practical skills

Away from the industrial-sized roles, this job can can involve installing and repairing gas and heating appliances, such as cookers and boilers, so it’s perfect for someone who loves working with their hands.

Attention to detail is vital, particularly given the nature of some of the problems you will have to fix – such as locating and repairing gas leaks or carrying out safety checks on appliances.

 

Have good people skills

Practical skills are crucial but people skills are not to be forgotten. You’ll often be working in large teams of or in customers’ homes and interacting with new folks daily.

Good communication skills – some of that mighty craic indeed – and a friendly, professional attitude will help you excel in this position.

 

Be able to work independently

Until you reach the top of the career ladder yourself, you must also be able to follow instructions from the big cheese.

But as a Gas Engineer often you’ll be your own boss, happily working alone on tasks each day. You must be able to do this while keeping track of time and ensuring the job is completed to the highest standard.
