One good deed deserves another

social 1A new app is encouraging members of the public to do good deeds.

Launched to coincide with the Edinburgh festival season, Deedit aims to tackle social issues such as homelessness, plastic pollution and the scourge of litter.

The idea is simple: complete a good deed then record the activity on the app with a photo or selfie.

We love the idea of making small, social changes as individuals – and if you work in social care you’ll know that collectively their impact can be enormous.

So why not keep the momentum going post-festival and beyond? These are just some of the easiest yet most effective good deeds we can do on a daily basis.

P.S. They’re also shiny gold stars on your karmic CV, if you’re going for a new role in the social services sector on s1jobs!

Home is where the heart is

While housing association employees and social workers help the homeless daily, there are ways we can help too.

This ranges from simply buying a sandwich, coffee or lunch at Social Bite, to contacting the relevant authorities or charities on the behalf of someone who is struggling.

Many organisations work in Scotland and can offer advice, assistance and immediate help.

Everybody needs good neighbours

The idea of belonging to a community is important, especially to the vulnerable, so what better way to strengthen this than lending a helping hand to neighbours?

Whether it’s assisting an elderly lady to the top floor with her shopping or mowing the lawn for the grand old gent next door, small acts of kindness can go a long way.

Don’t be a stranger

Spotted a tourist wandering around the city with their map upside down? Don’t be shy!

Offer directions or even some local insider knowledge. Scotland is renowned for being a friendly wee country – let’s show the world just how welcoming and helpful we really can be.

Give your stuff a new home

When having a clear-out at home it can be tempting to toss unwanted items in the bin. Job done, right? Not on your Aunt Nelly!

Give your old clothes, books and bric-a-brac an upcycled lease of life by donating them to a charity shop. This way everyone’s a winner!
