How to pass the hardest tests

Show all Legal vacancies across Scotland

At the beginning of May, Edinburgh University was forced to launch a review following the mysterious loss of four answer scripts to the Public Law of Scotland and UK exam paper.

legal2The scripts belonging to first year law students are worth 100% of the module grade, and appear to have vanished in this curious incident.

Regardless of whodunnit or why, the affected students now face the misery of having to resubmit another 500-word assignment.

But whether in the classroom or courtroom, sometimes life throws curveballs.

While we can’t prepare for everything, it’s always worth expecting the unexpected. So let s1jobs guide you on how to stay calm when exams – and legal cases – go wrong.

Always act fast

Okay, so the last thing you want to do after a horrible exam is relive the experience. But if you want to plead your case to the powers that be, it’s best to act quickly, particularly as many institutions have a time limit on appeals.

Be organised and present a rational argument with supporting evidence.

In courtroom situations, lawyers are expected to be clear and convincing, so communication and persuasion skills are a must.

Know who to contact

Depending on the issue, it’s worth knowing who to contact in the event of hiccups at uni or work.

At uni, as well as direct course coordinators and faculty leaders, there is always a vast support network in place at most institutions to help you: the chaplaincy, counselling, medical services and even the Students’ Union.

In the workplace, take the lead from legal peers and experienced partners. Using the right connections and support will make life easier.

Get organised

If you decide lodging an appeal is the way forward, get prepared. Familiarise yourself with the institution’s regulations – only when you know the due process can you begin to formulate an effective, convincing appeal supported by relevant paperwork.

Every good lawyer knows how important preparation is to success. You’d never see Perry Mason caught off-guard in the courtroom!

Get real

Above all, remember success in life isn’t always about succeeding first time. Just ask Albert Einstein, Hilary Clinton and Michelle Obama, all of whom failed exams at some point in their careers.
