Where are you on the accountancy career ladder? Have you just recently got your foot on the first rung or are you already scaling the heights?
Whether you’re newly qualified or work at a senior level, s1jobs can aid your career with opportunities to work across the sector – but don’t leave your next move up to chance. If you really are serious about getting to the top in one of the Big Four or becoming Chief Financial Officer in a global concern, you have to be strategic.
Just like Baldric in Black Adder, the best way to do this is to have a cunning plan. As this involves more than haggling for a priceless turnip (let’s face it, Baldric’s plans were never the best), here are some key career moves to consider.
1. Set out your goals Write a plan of where you want to be and what steps you need to take to achieve your ambition. Take time to review these regularly. Check you still genuinely want to aim in that direction. As your experience widens, new avenues may open up you haven’t yet considered.
2. Find a mentor The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland has a global mentoring programme. It doesn’t matter where in the world you work, they can find someone on your patch who is higher up in the profession and has the experience to guide your next move.
3. Put your hand up Volunteer for projects. Say yes to going the extra mile. Make yourself indispensable and you’ll soon find yourself getting noticed for all the right reasons.
4. Go on secondment Spending time in a different part of the business or on loan to a client could give your career the boost it needs to help you scale the ladder. Not only will you gain lots of experience but you could also make some useful contacts and improve your CV.
5. Keep up to date Don’t be the last to find out about changes in legislation, personnel movements in your own company or changes in the line-up at any of the Big Four. Knowledge is the key to staying sharp and getting ahead and there’s no excuse for not knowing what’s going on. Don’t just stick to accountancy – being well-informed about politics, world trade and local business will put you in a strong position to know what to do when you spot an opportunity for taking your career to the next level.
