Congratulations, you’ve found your ideal job on s1jobs, accepted your contract and handed in your notice. All that’s left to do is actually start the job.
You’re bound to be a little nervous, so here’s our guide to preparing for your first day in a new job and getting off to the best start possible.
Get a good night’s sleep
We know this might be easier said than done in some cases, but try your best to get a good night’s sleep before your first day no matter how nervous or excited you are. To help you drift off make sure your bedroom is a comfortable temperature, the lights are dimmed or off and distractions are minimised. It’s tempting to scroll through your phone for hours after you’ve gone to bed, but swap social media for a book or magazine instead to help you wind down and relax.
Decide on your outfit
Pick out your work clothes the night before so you don’t have to rush around at the last minute finding an outfit. Make sure everything is clean, ironed and in good condition. You don’t want to be halfway to your new job and realise you have a ladder in your tights or hole in your jumper!
Plan your travel arrangements
Make sure you know how to get to your new place of work in plenty of time, whether that’s negotiating rush hour traffic or researching bus routes. It’s better to be there a little early than rushing in ten minutes late because you didn’t realise how long the journey took.
Pack the essentials
Make sure you’ve got everything you might need on your first day in your handbag or briefcase. You might be required to bring your passport or proof of right to work if you haven’t already so, it’s always a good idea to take this with you just in case. Pack a notepad and pen as there’s probably going to be a lot to take in over the first few days and you might want to take notes. Remember to bring some money so you can buy lunch, or a packed lunch if your workplace isn’t near any shops or restaurants.
Relax!
Remember that you’ve been given the job because you were the best candidate for it. After a few months you’ll wonder what you were worried about.
