Show Customer Service jobs across Scotland

custservmcgirrIf all the surveys are correct, materialism has had the elbow. What we want now are experiences, not things, and top of the wish-list are moments that bring us closer to the natural world.

There’s now a large industry devoted to delivering precisely these kind of outdoor adventures and this has opened up opportunities for professionals who can take customer service to the next level.

It’s no longer enough to help ensure customers are happy with goods or services. Now you have to be able to hold their hand – metaphorically and physically – while they challenge themselves in all kinds of ways.

If you fancy working in this sector and are checking out Customer Service vacancies on s1jobs, it helps to have a bit of advice from a true pro.

So let’s meet Steven McGirr, who is Site Manager for Go Ape, the high-level, 426 metre, high-speed zip wire that whisks participants through treetops near Aberfoyle in the Trossachs.

What do you look for when recruiting customer service staff?

We used to select candidates based on their outdoor experience and qualifications but then we realised we needed to focus on the ‘wow’ factor. So we look for staff with great people skills and a positive attitude. Bring those and we can teach them the rest.

What’s the toughest part of the job?

You have to get everyone in the group paying attention to you while you’re talking them through their harness fitting and safety protocols. Some people will be fearless, others will be very scared and you’ve got to reassure them and make sure they’re okay. You’ve got to be able to identify who falls into which category very quickly and to pick out who is best suited to going first across the wire.

And the best?

The reactions of someone who has been very nervous then absolutely loves the experience. And everyone does love it.

What extra skills are useful?

Languages are always good. We get people coming here from France, the Netherlands, Japan and lots of other countries. And an ability to deal with people of all ages is essential. Anyone aged 10 and upwards can ride the zip wire and at one of our other sites they recently had a customer who was celebrating their 106th birthday.

We also work closely with the deaf community and we’ve had several amputees come along, so our Customer Service staff need to have the attitude that Go Ape is open to everyone.
