Reasons to be cheerful

When not studying hard to grasp the fundamentals of electrical, mechanical, civil or any other kind of engineering, undergraduates and apprentices are well known for their passion for playing hard and embracing the good life.

Engineering_2_small_circleYes, there’s nothing quite like engineers having a party in the students’ union.

Thankfully, this sense of positivity doesn’t stop when it comes to kickstarting careers or boosting business, as these good news stories show.

Pipe dreams

Engineering jokes can be a bit, erm, iffy but sometimes having a mind like a sewer is no bad thing.

Take, for instance, Clearwater Controls. This Scottish engineering firm has developed a device to monitor pumps, enabling real-time detection and elimination of blockages in wastewater pipes – and it now plans to expand operations to the USA and Australia.

The move comes after the Cumbernauld company secured six-figure funding from UK Steel Enterprise to support its pilot programmes.

Such innovation has always been at the heart of Scottish engineering and it demonstrates how your next job could find you clearing a path to success, as well as broadening your horizons.

Turbo boost

Italy has Ferrari. Germany has Porsche. Now Scotland has the Raptor RR, with plans unveiled to create around 80 examples of the bespoke sports car every year.

The move is not only exciting for car buffs, it also shows how engineering skills can transport your career straight into many different jobs sectors.

What would your dream creation be? For Raptor it’s the new RR, for Elon Musk it’s the SpaceX rocket. For you . . . the road is open and the sky’s the limit.

Ultrafast career

Cars are not the only way to fastback your career. Thanks to the largest recruitment drive ever from Openreach, 400 trainee engineers are to be hired across Scotland to speed up its plans to build ultrafast ‘Fibre To The Premises’ (FTTP) broadband.

The trainees in Scotland will join the UK’s largest team of telecoms engineers working to install, expand, upgrade and maintain new fibre lines over the national broadband network.

When it comes to boosting your career, what better call to action than an example of a new generation of engineers harnessing the power of a new generation of digital telecoms?
