There are always roles available for those who want to help others find their perfect job. That’s why you love s1jobs, after all!
But what if you want to become more closely involved in the jobs business itself and forge a brand new career in matching the right candidates with the right role and the right company?
To find out what it takes to be a recruitment specialist, we spoke to Shan Saba, an HR management graduate and now co-founder of BWSR.
What does a typical day as a recruitment consultant involve?
“No two days are the same, to be honest. We can be busy with sales, interviewing prospective candidates to find out their suitability for each role or grilling clients on the role profile. It’s vital, we know exactly the kind of person they’re looking for.
Most of the work is finding the perfect match between client and candidate because we’re trying to find careers people will thrive in.”
What skills are essential to be good in this role?
“To make this job work, you need to be on top of your time management and your ability to multi-task. You’ll find your attention split between a dozen things at once, if you’re lucky.
There can be setbacks, as well, so a thick skin and the ability to see the funny side are important survival skills.
We’ve always tried to make the environment as fun as possible – and we have a big commitment to giving back wherever possible.”
To what extent are the skills transferrable to or from other professions?
“So much is based on personality and forming meaningful relationships and that’s prevalent in almost every profession.
Drive and a desire to do the best for clients and candidates are central to the work as well.
Salesmanship is a big part of the role in terms of selling a role to a candidate or signing up a new client – throw in organizational skills and you’ll be well on your way to doing a good job.”
What advice would you give people looking to get a job as a recruitment consultant?
“It’s a long game. Don’t give up at the first hurdle. Be tenacious.
It’s not a job you can fall into so you need to do your homework and bone up on the companies you’re applying to.
Also, there are a lot of firms out there looking for new staff and candidates so, if you don’t get the result you’re looking for, keep trying.”
