It doesn’t matter what branch of retail you work in – and on s1jobs you can find vacancies in all of them – you’re only ever as good as your best stock.
Don’t have what the customer wants? They’ll go elsewhere and they might just keep on going.
For retail loyalty, every outlet has to work hard to be one step ahead of shopping trends.
Whether you’re a store manager or stock controller, to do this you need to know what’s selling and what’s going to be selling – so to help we’ve compiled a handy guide to some of this year’s bestsellers.
Avocados
We Brits now spend more on avocados than on oranges. Since being hailed a superfood, filled with health-giving nutrients, sales have climbed dramatically. To overcome the problem of determining whether or not they’re ripe, Asda now subjects every avocado it sells to a sonic reader to determine if the flesh is soft and buttery.
Gin
So-called Mother’s Ruin has had a makeover thanks to the flourishing of boutique labels all with their own secret blend of botanicals, the herbs used to give brands a distinctive flavour and a competitive advantage. Chin chin!
Robot vacuum cleaners
They’ve been around for a decade but only recently have they started to challenge traditional models. Now though they’re beginning to clean up.
Chalk paint
Who knew parents would one day encourage their children to write on walls? It’s not just the kids. Paint the kitchen walls and you’ll never want for somewhere to write a shopping list.
Pets
In Britain we now spend more than £7 billion every year on our pets, feeding them on luxury brands and tricking them out with bling. The cat’s pyjamas? That’s just the start. Designer coats for dogs, collars studded with crystals, puppy wash and shampoo for pets with sensitive skin – the pet shelves now rival the baby aisles.
Bow ties
Forget dress down Friday and smart casual. There’s been a return to ‘best bib and tucker’ as sales of bow ties rocket. Now everyone can free their inner Rupert the Bear, but only if they do the gentlemanly thing of learning to tie one themselves – ask your mum to do the deed or cheat with elastic and the game’s up.
Fidget spinners
Now this is a tricky one for store managers. Come late to the fad and you could find yourself with a warehouse full of spinners and no-one to spin them. Get in there fast!
