So what are these, how do they differ and which one is right for you? To get the big picture, here are some of the biggest employers.

Corporate

Do you have a background in business or finance? Then you’re well placed to carve out a successful career in this sector.

This is a specialised field where your activity is centred around stock issues, share prices and shareholder communications.

Your audience isn’t just the financial press but also company staff, who have to stay informed of key events via in-house communications.

Consumer

New homes, high-end hotels, fresh perfumes and aged whiskies – these are just some of the products and services that benefit from dedicated PR activity.

Your platforms are normally social media and the mainstream press and you could find yourself working in-house or with an agency dealing with multiple clients.

Part of your success in either will depend on your contacts and working relationships, as well as your knowledge of what makes a story.

Pharmaceutical

This industry is heavily regulated and in PR you’ll need to have a very clear knowledge of what rules and regulations apply to your activities.

You could find yourself organising conferences, working closely with researchers and dealing with patient groups, as well as briefing writers from medical journals and the mainstream media.

Government

The political agenda never stops and working in this sector means you could find yourself almost permanently on call as you meet the demands of a 24-hour news machine hungry for updates and speculation.

At times it can feel like being in the eye of a storm, so you’ll need a cool head as well as bucket loads of political savvy to ride out times of fevered political activity and close scrutiny.
