Small ideas make big changes

Show all Property jobs across Scotland

Last year the number of new homes built in Scotland increased by almost five per cent. It’s a significant figure but still a drop in the ocean when set against the demand for housing.

Property_1The truth is there aren’t enough homes to go round and whatever sector of the property industry you’re involved in – from estate agent to surveyor to housing association manager – you’ll be dealing on a daily basis with the consequences of this shortage.

If you want to play your part in finding a solution, s1jobs is a great place to start because we offer opportunities to join professionals at all levels who are already tackling the issue.

If Scotland is going to fill the gap between the lack of affordable homes and the numbers of people seeking a place of their own, we’re going to have to get creative.

So do you have a good idea about how to solve the problem? It doesn’t need to be a big idea, just the opposite in fact – a number of keen minds have already come up with micro-solutions to housing shortages.

These are the developers of ultra-small homes.

A great number of these have sprung up recently, all offering innovative designs for contemporary living.

Architects, designers and engineers have been creating affordable homes from a fresh perspective and come up with ideas that involve everything from repurposed shipping containers to tiny but luxurious residences.

So who would want to live in a space so small you can put out your hands and touch both walls? Well renters, for a start, who are fed up of not having a place that’s truly their own. Instead of paying out rent, these small homes give buyers a chance to own somewhere that’s affordable.

Environmentalists whose ethics drive them to use as few resources as possible are also advocates of micro-living.

And tiny spaces are also being trialled in some places as an answer to homelessness.

In fact, a whole movement has sprung up promoting micro-living, particularly in overcrowded cities.

So where do micro-homes fit into your career?

Well that depends if you want to design them, build them or sell them . . . but they are proof that, if you really want to think big, sometimes first you’ve got to think small.
