Show all Admin jobs across Scotland
At the beginning of May reports surfaced of a catastrophic “admin error” that led to hundreds of UK-based junior doctors having job offers withdrawn.
Upwards of 1000 doctors are thought to have been affected by the debacle, which has been blamed on a data transference issue between different computer programs.
The Royal College of Physicians has since apologised.
While hundreds of junior doctors now find themselves in limbo, we can only imagine the complex wrangle faced by administrators as they attempt to rectify the error. Admin is an often tough sector to navigate and can be a bit of a juggling act for the admin managers and assistants required to perform many duties simultaneously.
With this in mind, we guide you through some of the key duties expected of admin pros – and the top qualities you’ll need to succeed in this fast-paced world.
Office co-ordination
Admin staff are often the first port-of-call for all other company employees and are expected to provide assistance and support to every other department.
Secretarial, PA, clerical and data management are all typical duties expected of admins, so ab fab communication skills, the patience of a saint and pernickety attention to detail are musts.
Being able to manage challenging workloads effectively is also vital, as well as being able to solve problems as and when they inevitably arise.
Computer can-do
While not expected to display super-geek levels of technical know-how, Admins definitely do need to have some literacy when it comes to using computer software and packages.
Whether it’s excel spreadsheets or word documents, top Admins should be able to work across a variety of different mediums.
As well as a solid foundation in common software packages, the ability to quickly adapt to and learn new systems is essential, as new technology is often at the forefront of company expansion and diversification.
Specialised knowledge
The role of an admin is at the beating heart of just about every industry and employment sector. Corporate, charity, medical, legal . . . they all rely on teams of super-savvy admins to keep the day-to-day agendas ticking over.
Having some specialist knowledge of your chosen sector will ensure smooth sailing in the office – and may even elevate you to hero status among colleagues.
