Three role models for call centre heroics

Call and contact centres are the centre of the known universe for millions – the gateway to new products and the resolution of our problems.

They can be a comfort to the sick in the wee small hours or a fountain of knowledge for the financially-confused.

On s1jobs you’ll find call and contact centre vacancies in every sector, from banking and health to social services and shopping. And we’re sure you’ll do a fantastic job keeping customers happy, sticking tenaciously with tricky calls until you reach the root of the issue, being sympathetic and friendly to the confused and all the while hitting your targets and keeping your boss happy.

However it’s always possible to do better, so we thought we’d pass on some expertise from three professionals you may know from their day jobs.

Lieutenant Uhura

The Chief Communications Office on the Starship Enterprise doesn’t only take calls from Starfleet. She’s also working online with the Klingons and a galaxy of extra-terrestrials, all with their own frequencies, call signs and telekinetic habits.

She’s the consummate professional, a woman at the top of her game, with complete mastery of the technology and the ear of her commander.

Black holes and warp speeds hold no fear. She can pick up a signal from the other side of the universe and say “How may I help you” in more than a dozen different languages.

If you need a role model in multi-tasking, this is your girl.

Jeff Tracy

Tracy Island’s chief is a good man in a crisis. It’s not just his employees out there risking their lives and their multi-million pound Thunderbirds on rescue missions, it’s his family.

So how does Jeff handle the calls from his boys when they’re coursing too close to the sun or find themselves on an iceberg without a thruster to call their own?

Product knowledge, that’s how. There isn’t a Thunderbird ship that Jeff can’t pilot himself and he has complete faith in his technical department (Brains) to do the science bit. A true inspiration.

Janine Melnitz

The sharp-talking receptionist in the original Ghostbusters movies has a lot on her plate. The clients are crazed, the bosses are barmy and at times she has to drop telephone duties to hunt down spooks.

Does she let any of this get her down? No! Janine deals with the daft and the undead with admirable directness. She may have dodgy taste in clothes and jewellery, but her feet are firmly on the ground. A living lesson in staying calm and being patient.
