Tips and tricks for working in HR

There’s never been a better time to forge a career in HR, thanks largely to an increase in the number of potential ways to start out.

This is no longer a graduate-only sector. In fact, apprenticeships and trainee positions have opened up HR to people of all ages and backgrounds – from school leavers to career changers.

If you’re hoping to join them with one of the positions in HR from s1jobs, here are some handy tips and tricks for making your mark.

Get paid while learning

Many firms will be happy to provide on-the-job training. So, if you feel your career and confidence could be boosted with extra qualifications, be sure to ask about the possibility for upskilling at your interview. This also shows just how keen and enthusiastic you are to maximise your talents.

Get yourself noticed

Wearing a bright tartan suit will catch everyone’s attention but we recommend something more subtle. Begin filling your phone with people who can help you in your career – HR professionals who have the experience and knowledge to mentor you. Social media sites can help you source new contacts but don’t be shy about asking co-workers to link you in to their networks.

Make it clear

At some point you’re going to be faced with a dispute where the truth is as clear as a hippo’s bath water. To get any sense of clarity will take great detective skills. Above all, however, it’s important to stay focussed and assertive. Being drawn into a dispute will only make the situation muddier – negotiate, mediate and adjudicate and if grey areas still exist seek guidance from your HR Manager.

Get experience

HR is full of different specialisms, from talent managers to reward analysts. While you may enjoy a broad remit when starting out, be sure to get experience in as many different areas as possible. The specialism that gives you the most satisfaction could point your career in an unexpected yet very rewarding direction.

Get your game face on

You may still be learning yourself but from day one you must also be helping others. At the heart of HR is the ability to understand what employees need to get the most out of their jobs and for the company to get the best out of their employees. Get off to a flying start by working out new ways to engage and provide the relevant support and motivation.
