‘Tis the season . . . to be hard at work

Ho, ho, ho! It’s nearly Christmas. Or should that read: No, no, no, it’s nearly Christmas and some poor souls have to go to work.

While most of us look forward to wondering how early we can open the fizz on Christmas Day, eat the contents of selection boxes and watch re-runs of Elf, there are many workers for whom the 25th of December will be just like any other.

The hard fact is that medical, health and social care workers will make up the majority of folks foregoing their Christmas festivities.

But for those working this year, there’s no need to be bah humbug about it.

In fact, for anyone considering a medical career among the many roles currently on s1jobs, there are unexpected upsides to working during holidays.

Move over Scrooge, here are our top festive benefits!

1. Freedom

Revel in the fact there are no hold-ups on the roads and you can probably halve your journey time while everyone else is at home. If you’re on the train, there’ll be no rush for the last seat. Instead you’ll get a carriage to yourself where you can singalong to Slade as loud as you want.

2. Sympathy

Your family and friends will be extra considerate, as they’ll be feeling sorry for you. Think less washing up, being in charge of the remote and getting first dibs on the chocolates when you get home.

3. Independence

Okay so you may be missing out on the food, presents and telly but you also have a get-out clause to bypass some of those awkward social situations: family squabbles, parties with the neighbours and long nights with the in-laws!

4. Instant karma

Take extra comfort in the fact you’ll have time off when the roads are back to being blocked. While everyone is moaning about going back to work, sit back and smile in the knowledge you’re just about to enjoy your break. Anyone for an unhurried saunter through the January sales?

5. Job satisfaction

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a consultant surgeon or a part-time cleaner, an NHS manager or a locum GP. By working during the holidays, you’re ensuring patients get the care they need, you’re giving them the best Christmas present they could ever wish for.
