Tourism . . . what’s the big idea?

Show all Hospitality, Catering and Tourism jobs across Scotland

Scotland is big on tourism. In fact, it’s one pf our most important job sectors, employing more than 207,000 people and continually creating new roles. It also directly supports local economies.

hospitality 1So it was great to hear that, according to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics, visits to Scotland were up by 17% last year.

The number of overseas visitors rose to 3.2 million, with 1.9 million visits by European tourists who spend £1.1 billion. That’s a whopping 36% increase.

In contrast across the UK as a whole, the number of European visitors increased by just 1%, while spending actually fell by 1%.

So how is Scotland managing to outperform the rest of the UK so spectacularly?

Well, we’ve a few big ideas.

Big Landscapes

Many visitors are first introduced to Scotland’s spectacular natural beauty through hit TV shows such as Outlander. But seeing the real thing can still take their breath away.

From mountain highs to craggy coastlines and sweeping sandy beaches, there are few places in the world that can beat Scotland for majestic landscapes.

Big Cities

It’s not all about the hills and glens. Our cities have also done their bit. The number of tourists who visited Glasgow, for example, rose by almost 20% last year and spending in the city rose by more than a third to £319 million.

The city also hosted a record 500 conferences worth £123 million.

Big Attractions

Tourist spending supports our culture and arts and the brand new V&A Dundee, which opens in a few weeks, is already attracting huge interest.

Last year the 11th and 12th slots in the UK’s top 10 visitor attractions were Edinburgh’s National Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh Castle with an astonishing two million visits each.

The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow played host to more than 1.3 million art lovers in 2017 – all putting Scotland’s art scene firmly in the picture.

Big Adventures

Everyone loves the adventure of a road trip. So it’s a miracle we kept the North Coast 500 as secret for so long. This circular route takes travellers through breathtaking scenery.

In the twelve months after its ‘official’ launch in 2015, it was estimated to have brought an extra 29,000 visitors.

Of course, all of these attractions need a host of specialists catering for visitors. If you’d like to join them, pay a visit to Hospitality/Catering/Tourism vacancies on s1jobs.
