How to train staff for the future

We’ve entered a brave new world of automation, augmented reality and, in some places, autocracy.

While this has sent some nervous CEOs into a mild panic, the smartest managers are already looking at ways to future proof their employees – and, of course, their company’s bottom line.

Training and development is the key area where these innovators offer opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Small_Executive_2Although it’s perfectly reasonable to assume employees will keep their job skills up to date by seeking out training opportunities, by offering ways to help managers can motivate, mentor and make sure the long-term future of their business is taken care of.

Why? Well, bearing in mind lack of career advancement is second only to low pay as a source of work stress, by training staff you not only get a higher skills base but a happier, more engaged workforce.

Here are a few ways to help.

Encourage great expectations

Career development goals should be just another part of the day job. If you encourage employees to prepare for the future right from their first day, and include this in performance evaluations, it creates a climate where upskilling is the norm.

Walk the line

Direct support from a line manager means employees get encouragement and advice that is job-specific – and that means relevant to both their current role and long-term aspirations. Senior managers should engage at all levels to make sure these lines of communication are open and being used.

Be soft centred

Thankfully, we are moving to a more equal workplace where both men and women can gain the technical skills necessary to be great at their jobs. However, both sexes must also be offered opportunities to develop the soft skills they’ll need in the future, such as communication, leadership, empathy and diplomacy.

Time is on your side

Being able to take part in development activities means allocating sufficient time during regular working hours for training. This way normal tasks and duties should not be affected and employees will not feel they’re being put under extra stress – or feel the need to give up their Pilates class to learn the new payroll software.

Practice makes perfect

Learning new skills is all well and good but these talents must be used to be effective. Provide opportunities for staff not only to talk the talk but walk the walk. In other words, make your investment in upskilling pay off the company and for its staff – right here, right now.
