While some prefer to savour the flavour of other people’s fancies, others prefer to create the dishes.

hospitality 2It’s sometimes an art form, always a lot of fun and usually incredibly satisfying work (with the exception of deflated soufflés).

From executive chefs running grand kitchens in five-star hotels to café cooks in seaside towns, this is a sector where there are many opportunities to get yourself started.

And there are some workplaces you may not have even thought of.

Oil Rigs

Oil drilling can be hard work and so the platforms in the North Sea need top chefs, cooks and kitchen assistants to cater for an army of hungry workers.

The added challenge of being offshore means inventiveness and creativity with ingredients, especially when supplies are delayed by bad weather.

Hospitals

Patients who are not at their fighting fitness need extra nutrition and special sustenance and this means hospital catering is often quite specialised.

Not only will you be preparing tasty meals, you will also be adding your own input to patients’ recovery.

Schools

Long gone are the days of lumpy mash and cold semolina. While there’s a Curriculum for Excellence in education, there’s also an expectation of excellence in school meals.

And seeing happy, well-fed kids is even more satisfying than Granny Ina’s sticky toffee pudding.

Music Festivals

Your mum and dad may have been happy to queue up for a greasy veggie burger back in the day but today’s festivalgoers are more discerning.

Catering for crowds means event planning as well as excelling in the kitchen.

There are the travel logistics, as well as setting up a temporary workplace – often in a field of mud (some things never change!).

Number one perk? You get to travel and hear live music for free.

Care Homes

Whether it’s for the elderly, the infirm or young, vulnerable children, care homes are designed to be places where residents feel safe, happy and looked after.

Of course, this includes being able to eat tasty, nutritional meals.

That’s where you come in. Sometimes, quite literally through the front door, as a caterer visiting with hot food: what Granny Ina called meals-on-wheels.

Or you could be working in-house in a bespoke kitchen.

Either way you can enjoy the fact your culinary skills are helping others every single day.
