If you’re a skilled administrator, secretary or PA, you can find a fit for your talents in almost every industry. But there are some surprising sectors you may not have considered yet.
Academia
University and colleges are always in need of top-notch administrators and receptionists to support core teaching and research activities. Depending on the size of the department, you may be working alone or as part of a small team.
Typical duties include diary management, processing expenses and organising travel and accommodation for members of the department and recruitment activities.
You’re also likely to be involved with expenditure, organising events and workshops and providing support to committees.
Hospitality & Tourism
Working in admin for a hotel or tourism business can be a highly rewarding role. Depending on the size of the operation your job could involve front of house, reservations, processing payments, managing stock, looking after payroll and other invoicing.
While many jobs in this sector involve shift work, admin roles are usually office hours so you can enjoy the buzz of an industry where no two days are the same, with the stability of a regular work pattern.
And, if you love travel, the experience gives you a great way to work around the world and experience life in other cultures.
Healthcare
Working as a medical receptionist combines strong admin skills with good customer service. You’re the first person people will meet when they come through the door of a clinic or hospital. And, let’s face it, most people aren’t there out of choice so a pleasant manner can really put patients at ease.
You’ll need to be confident in dealing with a variety of people, including medics and medical reps, as well as patients themselves.
Good numeracy and literacy and previous admin experience are always an advantage but training can be given on the job.
If you’re methodical and prefer a behind-the-scenes role, working in medical records could be for you.
Education
If you need to work flexibly because of caring commitments, an admin role in a school can be a great place to put your talents to work.
Reporting to the head teacher, your duties would involve general admin and finance, data management and supporting computer systems.
If you enjoy feeling part of a community, a school administrator role would be highly satisfying. Plus you get to enjoy those long holidays!
