Win by working more closely

Anyone familiar with the long-running TV show Scrubs will know of JD and Turk’s solid friendship and how this helps them pull together as a team in the hospital.

But the importance of getting on with your work colleagues rings true for any medical facility, even the smallest of GP surgeries.

Let’s find out why.

Create communication

It may sound obvious but when you don’t work as a team, communication links are broken. It’s important for everyone to learn to communicate effectively, from doctors to the cleaners of the building, so issues are addressed quickly and directly. Lack of chat results in chaos, which is unacceptable in a place where, to be dramatic, lives are at potentially at stake.

Move to motivation

It’s important to understand the effects motivation and sharp focus can have on a group. Having a team with a positive attitude will result in higher patient satisfaction and skyrocket their opinion of the clinic. This is particularly important in a place where patients are feeling ill – seeing the entire team smiling and brimming with positivity will do wonders for them.

Understand each other’s strengths

If you don’t work together successfully, you won’t know what each person’s strengths or weaknesses are. A benefit of strong teamwork is that the leaders can divvy up tasks so they are carried out by the most qualified and experienced, in order to minimise the amount of medical errors made. In healthcare, everything needs to be double and triple-checked, so that an incorrect diagnosis is not given or the right prescription handed over to the wrong patient!

Minimise waiting times

There’s nothing worse than sitting in a waiting room for over an hour while trying to hold in a barking cough and slowly turning beetroot purple. Even the back issues of Farmers Weekly can’t help. However, if the team at the GP surgery is working well together as a team, processes will speed up, queues will get shorter and patients will be seen quicker, equating to happier, healthier people all round.

Create a better work environment

Working in a GP surgery will be at times challenging and chaotic but if the team works effectively things will come together and your job will ultimately be immensely rewarding. When your work environment is balanced and you feel valued, it will rub off on your patients and they’ll really appreciate it too.
