Full Job Description

The post-holder will be a key member of NatureScot's wildlife management team undertaking a range of duties in support of advancing a modern approach to wildlife management. This will entail the development and promotion of novel approaches to the management of conflict species. The practical advancement of NatureScot's Shared Approach to wildlife management, with a focus on the promotion and implementation of adaptive management, will be key., Modern Wildlife Management

  • Provide advice to a range of stakeholders on wildlife management issues.
  • Support the practical implementation of NatureScot's Shared Approach to wildlife management, both internally and externally.
  • Develop and lead the implementation of adaptive management principles, across wildlife issues.
  • Contribute to the development and application of wildlife management policy, including legislation.
  • Develop a practical implementation of wildlife welfare principles.
  • Identify wildlife communication opportunities and contribute advice to NatureScot's media team.
  • Beaver Management
  • Supporting the translocation process for beaver in Scotland by working with land managers, those interested in hosting beavers and with other stakeholders.
  • Providing advice relating to beaver casework, in support of the licensing team.
  • Responsible for delivery of casework projects under the Scottish Beaver Mitigation Scheme.
  • Support the work of the Scottish Beaver Advisory Group in delivering Scotland's Beaver Strategy, Whether working at home or in an office, or travelling to meetings and site visits, as a NatureScot you will contribute to our Net Zero plan, for example through positive carbon travel choices. You will aim to minimise travel in accordance with NatureScot's low carbon operating procedures. However, you will, in some circumstances, be expected to work with colleagues and stakeholders from across Scotland, which will involve some travel and may involve overnight stays.

    The post-holder will be involved in work across a range of species issues requiring engagement with a diverse range of stakeholders and deliver work specifically on beaver management. The post holder will, through matrix management, lead and work with different teams across NatureScot. The ability to manage a high profile and varied workload efficiently and effectively is required along with good interpersonal skills., Good understanding or experience of NatureScot's application of wildlife management policy, with particular focus on adaptive management.
  • Understanding of the need for wildlife management and knowledge of wider wildlife management approaches .
  • Project Management
  • Staff/ team management (includes line and matrix management) as the post will lead a range of staff on the delivery of specific projects in addition to the possibility of direct line management responsibility.
  • Good interpersonal skills including the ability to listen and engage in dialogue with a wide range of stakeholders, to understand and appreciate their needs, including in relation to novel and contentious cases.
  • Good organisational and time management skills to effectively prioritise and deliver a high volume of reactive and proactive workload
