Consultant only if applicable:

Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR - Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once it has been awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.  

Applications are welcome for the above Permanent, full time (40 hours per week) post based in Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh


The successful applicant will be based at the Edinburgh Renal Unit at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE). There is an acute and general medicine component to the role also provided within the Royal infirmary of Edinburgh.

On call duties are in Renal Medicine providing consultant cover at nights and weekends and in acute and General medicine providing acute medical take and care of general medicine patients out of hours.

  • GMC registered medical practitioner
  • CCT or equivalent in Renal Medicine.
  • CCT or equivalent in General Internal Medicine
  • Maintain GMC specialist registration and hold a licence to practice.
  • General Nephrology Outpatient Service RIE
  • Haemodialysis Service RIE
  • General nephrology, acute nephrology in-patient service.
  • Co-ordination of the undergraduate medical student teaching within renal medicine.
  • Renal nights and weekends on call, currently at a frequency of 1 in 13 weeknights and 1 in 7 weekends.
  • General Medicine annualized rolling 24 week rota.
  • The post attracts a 3% availability supplement.
  • Ability to act at consultant level in general nephrology including the care of long-term dialysis patients and acute nephrology.
  • Ability to act at consultant level in acute and general medicine.
  • Ability to take full responsibility for independent management of patients.
  • A track record in organizing and delivery of medical teaching and training.
