Entry Criteria for a Specialty Doctor:
A doctor appointed to this grade:
shall have full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council (GMC);

And

  • shall have completed at least four years full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a less than full-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme or specialty registrar locum appointment for training (LAT);

Or

  • shall have equivalent training, experience or competencies, either in the UK or overseas.

Applications are welcome for the above Fixed Term, full time (40 hours per week) post based in St Johns Hospital.

This is a full-time post on a one-year fixed-term contract. It is aimed at senior trainee or post-fellowship anaesthetists looking to further their experience in airway management.

At St Johns hospital we provide anaesthesia for several airway procedures and the Fellow can expect to be involved in

  • Awake tracheal intubations (flexible bronchoscopic and veideolaryngoscopic)
  • Transnasal Humidified Rapid Insufflation Ventilatory exchange (THRIVE). St Johns was an early adopter of this technique and we have published several papers on its use in head and neck patients.
  • Teaching and training in videolaryngoscopy for more junior members of staff
  • Jet ventilation techniques- the department is presently trying to source funding for a high frequency jet ventilator
  • Clinical management (and airway management MDTs) of complex airways wherever in NHS Lothian they are encountered
