Full Job Description
The School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment (SCEBE) utilises a team of technicians to support its workshops, laboratories and infrastructure supporting the academic and research activities within the school. Technicians provide practical support and expert knowledge to enhance the excellent teaching and student experience. The post holder will be part of this team and will provide technical support for activities associated with the School. The role holder will be responsible for the general upkeep of laboratories, workshops and equipment associated with their specific area of expertise. Working with the Technical Services Leadership Group to ensure compliance with national Health and Safety regulations in line with university policy. Specifically, the technician will focus on the day to day running of the Polymer Engineering Laboratory and Materials and Nano Materials Laboratories. This includes performing various tasks such as operating lab equipment, conducting tests, and developing protocols., Based in the lively and exciting Merchiston area at the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland's inspiring capital, the School of Computing, Engineering & the Built Environment (SCEBE) is embarking on a major development in the area of Industry 4.0, bringing together computer science, engineering, mathematics, and construction technology. The School has one of the UK's largest computer science departments and it houses leading UK research centres in transport policy and sustainable construction. We have excellent computing, engineering, and construction lab facilities. According to the Research Excellence Framework in 2021, we are the number one Scottish Modern University for research in Computer Science & Informatics, Engineering and for Architecture, Built Environment and Planning as well as being the number one university in Edinburgh for overall student satisfaction - for the fourth year in a row! Essential to delivering an excellent teaching and student experience are our technicians. They provide practical support and expert knowledge in our workshops, laboratories, and infrastructure to support with our academic and research activities within the School.
- Practical and theoretical knowledge with experience of relevant technical equipment relating to the Nano & Sustainable \materials Research Technologies.
- Extensive practical experience of working with relevant equipment such as microfluidizers, freeze dryers, centrifuges & chemical workstations for the preparation of samples.
- Experience of day to day running of the Laboratories and workshops, including the maintenance of specialised equipment, inventories, and resource purchasing to facilitate activities within the laboratory.
- Familiarity with relevant health and safety procedures and COSHH procedures
- Ability to adapt and expand knowledge as required to facilitate School requirements
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written to provide customer-focused solutions to both students and staff
