Full Job Description

We are looking for a Technical Safety Lead to ensure the British Gas engineering standards, policies, process, procedures, and work instructions satisfy mandatory regulatory requirements, ensuring the business maintains compliance with regulations, standards and codes of practice. As a Technical Safety Lead, you will represent British Gas on key external bodies, committees, and forums to support and influence the development of industry technical standards and safety requirements, procedures & good practice as required. This includes relevant regulations, standards, and codes of practice; and maintaining awareness across British Gas of potential material changes. British Gas has a Group Competency Scheme in place, and this role plays a key part in ensuring the scheme is effectively managed and industry leading. The role of the Technical team is to establish and assure the Technical Standards in the British Gas Services and Solutions business, maintain our Gas Safe, Electrical, Metering and other registrations enabling the right to operate, and maintain close relationships with regulators and industry bodies. This is delivered through a team of industry experts and specialists to support the business to operate and grow in new and existing domestic markets, minimising risk to customers, employees and the business. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Development and updating of British Gas Technical Operational Procedures, ensuring that the information contained is clear, concise and complies with industry standards, regulations, codes of practice as required for domestic gas, metering and other areas.
  • Support and advise the business and other key stakeholders on technical safety standards, compliance and conformance.
  • Provide engineering leadership in the business and in industry to support the Centrica objectives of becoming a net zero business.
  • The primary technical contact for regulatory bodies signifying Centrica's' leading position and protecting our brands within the industry through correct technical advice and strong relationships.
  • Development and delivery of Technical updates and communications.
  • Managing the delivery of work against project plans and liaise with all stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered on time and in budget.
  • Support the development of Technical Safety Assurance and corrective action processes and procedures; Ensuring corrective actions implemented from breaches drive compliance and reduce the risk of re-occurrence.

    Possess an in-depth understanding of mechanical design, installation and maintenance practices, across domestic applications, with a sound understanding as required on energy sources (gas, electrical, other fuels etc), products, (i.e. appliances, chimney systems, heating systems), metering and network systems.
  • Possess an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Gas Safety Management Regulations, Gas Safety Installation and use Regulations and any other regulatory requirements as appropriate for the business operation activities
  • Possess an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Building Regulations for England, Wales and Scotland.
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills with a proven attention to technical detail, including the ability to produce technical reports for internal and external view.
  • Demonstrate an ability to handle and prioritise multiple projects and tasks and the ability to work under pressure and to challenging deadlines.
  • Hold (as a minimum) an NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) qualification in gas / mechanical installation and maintenance, as well as a full driving license.
  • Have an professional registration with IGEM, minimum at EngTech level, IEng preferable.
  • Extensive practical experience of the energy industry mechanical engineering.
  • Have expert knowledge of industry practices, and implementation - including competence management.
  • Investigating significant incidents and identifying root cause(s).
  • Track record of delivering continuous improvements in technical safety culture and HSE performance.
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing and relationship management skills.
