Consultant Microbiologist or Consultant Microbiologist with Infectious Diseases

Permanent 40 hours per week

Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once CESR is awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training. 

Applicants are welcome for the above posts to join a team of 7 Consultant Microbiologists who together with Virologists and Infectious Diseases Physicians provide an infection service covering the whole of Lothian. The vacancies is one of 2 based at St Johns Hospital, Livingston.

The Lothian Microbiology service includes five Scottish reference laboratories, dealing with Mycobacteria, E. coli O157, Bacterial Sexually-Transmitted Infections, Human Papilloma Virus and Viral Haemorrhagic Fever as well as Specialist Virology services. The laboratories have full UKAS ISO 15189:2012 accreditation.

We have excellent working relationships with clinical teams and have ongoing collaboration with researchers in Edinburgh and beyond. The post holder will play a significant role in delivery of infection consult service, antimicrobial stewardship and contribute to OPAT.

Our goal is to make best use of available expertise in the management of infection for optimal patient care in our region. To achieve this we aim to develop teams comprising microbiologists, virologists, infectious diseases physicians and infection prevention and control colleagues at each of our base hospitals.

The post-holder will have a CCT in Microbiology or Microbiology and Infectious Diseases or be within 6 months at interview date of achieving this. On-call is 1:8 pro-rata with prospective cover and a 5% availability supplement.

The vacancies are full-time, but part-time or job-share applicants will be considered.
