Entry Criteria for a Specialty Doctor:
A doctor appointed to this grade:
shall have full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council (GMC);

And

• shall have completed at least four years full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a less than full-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme or specialty registrar locum appointment for training (LAT);

Or

• shall have equivalent training, experience or competencies, either in the UK or overseas.

The department of Medicine of the Elderly, Western General Hospital Edinburgh, wish to appoint a speciality doctor with an interest in the Perioperative care of the Older Person in surgery (POPs) 

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with an interest in medicine of the elderly and surgery, to work alongside an enthusiastic, supportive and motivated team of geriatricians and specialist nurses to continue to develop and provide an innovative POPS service with close working links with surgeons and anaesthetists. The service will continue its commitment to improve the quality of care for older frailer people within the surgical (colorectal and urology) departments of the WGH hospital, to provide Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, and realistic decision making  within a well established, evolving and dynamic MDT

Medicine for the Elderly activity will include in-patient care for frail older people who are having elective surgical procedures, as well as frail patients who have presented acutely to the surgical departments within the WGH hospital. There is opportunity to support a dedicated outpatient clinic providing proactive assessment of frailty ahead of surgery and discuss the surgical interventions planned, applying realistic medicine principles within a dedicated MDT including surgeons, anaesthetists and geriatricians. 

The department has an excellent reputation for education and training, quality improvement and clinical research, and non-clinical interests will be encouraged. 

The successful candidate will contribute to service planning; clinical governance and continued quality improvement.

You will be fully supported in the appraisal and revalidation process.

For newly appointment specialty doctors there is the opportunity of mentorship offered by existing experienced and supportive consultants, as well as support via our network of speciality doctors within NHS Lothian via the LASASC (Lothian Area Staff Grade and Associate Specialists Committee) 

The post is a permanent appointment as a Speciality Doctor within the Medicine for the Elderly & Stroke Medicine and will be for 16 hours a week.
