NHS Lothian covers Edinburgh city, East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian. We are the second largest health system in NHS Scotland and one of only four teaching Boards. We have strategic partnerships with local Universities, Local Authorities and our four Integration Joint Boards. We serve a population of 900,000, providing a range of primary, community based and acute hospital services. We also provide regional and national services across a range of clinical specialties.

The vision for the Pharmacy & Medicines service is to deliver clinically led, person-centred services to ensure patients across Lothian get the best from their medicines and pharmacy services. We are focused on creating an environment where each person in the team has the opportunity to flourish, develop and make best use of their skills.

The Little France Campus is located on the southeast of Edinburgh and hosts both the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) and the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (RHCYP). RIE is the largest teaching hospital in the health board with an established reputation for offering the best practice across a wide variety of specialist services. RHCYP provides paediatric tertiary services for the Southeast of Scotland population.

Due to the retirement of the current postholder, we are seeking an exceptional pharmacist leader to develop, and drive forward with the RIE/RHCYP Pharmacy Senior Departmental Managers the optimization of pharmaceutical care to patients accessing a wide range of acute adult and paediatric pharmacy. The post has been reviewed with removal of responsibility for pharmacy distribution, and off-site services (i.e. Ophthalmology, dermatology and sexual health) from the job remit. This will allow greater attention to RIE and RHCYP pharmacy clinical services and the dispensing of inpatient and outpatient medicines. As a result, the postholder will work closely with pharmacy Team leads responsible for cross site managed services delivery (e.g. Pharmacologistics, Aseptic, Business Function and other Site Lead Pharmacists) to ensure that cohesive working that meets the needs of patients and staff members.

The temporary postholder will test the new portfolio of work for the 12-month period to inform the best management model for the future for these teams.

This role requires pharmacy representation at RIE and RHCYP Hospital Management Group meetings to ensure the appropriate advice and input is provided to these senior site management teams. The postholder will also be influential within the pharmacy senior leadership team and the medicines governance committees of NHS Lothian (e.g. Medicines Policy & Procedures Committee).

The post holder will be a registered as a Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and should have completed a post graduate qualification in clinical pharmacy or equivalent. They must be dynamic and have significant experience of fostering effective teams and their development.  Excellent strategic leadership, communication and interpersonal skills are required. Secondments are welcome but please ensure that permission from your current line manager has been sought prior to applying for this post.
