Full Job Description

SAMS has an exciting opportunity for two short-term internships to help with four days of family events and four days of school workshops that explore how satellites help us understand and monitor climatic and biodiversity changes in the global ocean and the polar regions through workshops, games, competitions, demonstrations and displays. The events will feature active researchers and science communicators from SAMS and partner organisations to showcase current and recently completed relevant science projects on topics such as ocean heat waves, changing surface ocean currents, deglaciation and flooding, and the development of ground-truthing robots. The events will further incorporate artistic and fun elements such as ocean conveyor belt origami and include existing engagement activities developed by the larger project. Required event dates:

  • 19th - 20th October 2024 (11.00 - 15.00hrs) in the Ocean Explorer Centre, at SAMS
  • 17th - 22nd November 2024 (10.00 - 16.00hrs) at the Rockfield Centre, Oban.
  • Four of the above days will be family events (to be held on 19th - 20th October 2024, 17th November and 21st November 2024) and four more structure school workshops (to be held on 18th, 19th, 20th and 22nd November). The November events are part of Oban's winter festival programme. Our Ideal Candidate: We are looking for applicants who can communicate clearly and enthusiastically with family and school audiences and have a good understanding of science. But we also welcome applications from local community members who may have an interest in the environment, in STEM or events or who may be looking for an opportunity to get back into work. You must be available at least for 7 of the 8 days mentioned above, including all of the November dates. Successful applicants will be provided with training in advance of the first event. Interested? We would love to hear from you. If you have queries on this opportunity and would like to talk these through before applying, please do not hesitate to get in touch. For further information, please visit the SAMS website. Interested applicants should apply by CV and short cover letter. Your cover letter should include the following:
  • What is it about our opportunity that interests you?
  • Could you suggest an activity or display to inspire a family about satellite use for researching the ocean? You might gain inspiration from the project website: Our World From Space - The Association for Science and Discovery Centres (sciencecentres.org.uk)
  • Confirm your availability over our event days - (19th - 20th October 2024 and 17th - 22nd November 2024).
  • Tell us how you would benefit from this internship
