NHS Lothian covers Edinburgh city, East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian. We are the second largest health system in NHS Scotland and one of only four teaching Boards. We have strategic partnerships with local Universities, Local Authorities and our four Integration Joint Boards. We serve a population of 900,000, providing a range of primary, community based and acute hospital services. We also provide regional and national services across a range of clinical specialties.
The vision for the Pharmacy & Medicines service is to deliver clinically led, person-centred services to ensure patients across Lothian get the best from their medicines and pharmacy services. We are focussed on creating an environment where each person in the team has the opportunity to flourish, develop and make best use of their skills.
The Western General Hospital (WGH) is a large teaching hospital with an established reputation for offering the best practice across a wide variety of specialist services. It is also home to the Edinburgh Cancer Centre, which is a leading centre for cancer services provision.
We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and highly motivated pharmacy technician to join our team at the WGH. The post holder will be working with the aseptic dispensing team to deliver the priorities of aseptic services, with a focus on total parenteral nutrition (TPN), complex Central Intravenous Additive Systems (CIVAS), systemic anticancer therapy (SACT) as well as in novel research and development products including Advanced Therapeutic Medicinal Products (ATMPs). The WGH team are committed to increase their research and development portfolio and welcome opportunities to support development of clinical trial on site.
The postholder will be expected to work autonomously as part of a team, including undertaking some leadership responsibilities and deputising for section leads. They will be supported to undertake additional qualifications to undertake the full remit of the role such as the Pharmacy Aseptic Checking Technician (PACT) and to be a Clean Room Supervisor. There will also be opportunities to undertake service improvement activities and line management/mentorship roles to support other junior pharmacy technicians and pharmacy support workers.
This is an exciting time to join our team who is committed to service modernisation and value our staff experience. The multidisciplinary team at the WGH site recognises the positive impact pharmacy technicians can bring to improving the patient journey and are highly supportive in the progression of these roles.
Candidates must have the National Certificate in Pharmacy Services and Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent and should also have completed the HN unit: Procedures for Pharmacy Dispensary Checking Technicians or Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician Award (provided by Buttercups or NPA, 2019 or before) and HNC Pharmacy Services Development and Management or be able to demonstrate equivalent competence. Candidates will be required to evidence registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) in the application form and at interview.
