Full Job Description
The Role
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated Pharmacy Technician to join the pharmacy team at University Hospital Monklands to provide maternity cover. This post will require an enthusiastic, forward thinking individual with excellent communication and time management skills to ensure the provision of an effective, safe and person-centred approach to delivering pharmaceutical care to OPAT patients. This post holder will be required to drive and have access to a car. The post older will work across all 3 of the acute sites - University Hospital Monklands, University Hospital Wishaw and University Hospital Hairmyres and potentially primary care sites.
The post holder will be a key contributor to the OPAT multidisciplinary team supporting the OPAT pharmacist by completing medicines reconciliation, interaction checks, medicines information enquiries and patient counselling, including on complex oral antibiotic regimes. This will require interpretation of relevant haematological and biochemical laboratory tests.
This post will involve liaison with patients, the OPAT team and District nurses to co-ordinate the supply of medication particularly for Intravenous administration. It will also require communication with the wider Primary Care team, i.e. GPs and community pharmacy to ensure robust pharmaceutical governance. You will develop, maintain and analyse an accurate recording system to ensure a comprehensive audit trail is available for all dispensing episodes and quantities are maintained to ensure cost efficiencies. Experience in using Word and Excel would be advantageous.
This post will provide opportunities to further develop your skills and to support the continuous drive to improve cost effective and safer use of medicines. There will be an opportunity to attend NHS Lanarkshire Quality Improvement training and to use these skills to audit local care against the recognised OPAT Key Performance Indicators. You will be expected to contribute to the Antimicrobial Management team within NHS Lanarkshire and have input at local and national meetings. What we'll need you to bring
National Certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent
SVQ Level III
Registered pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
Dispensary checking or aseptic checking qualification
Commitment to CPD
Minimum of 2 year post qualification experience as qualified pharmacy technician in hospital pharmacy service
Experience in dispensing Discharge/OPD/in-patient prescriptions
Experience in providing a ward/department stock top-up service.
Experience in supervision of other staff or of a functional area of pharmacy.
Thorough understanding of hospital pharmacy services
Ability to carry out aseptic and cytotoxic drug reconstitution
Computer skills/key board skills
Good communication skills both verbal and written
Ability to organise and prioritise work
Team player
Valid UK Driving Licence with access to car
Contract type
Fixed Term or Secondment for 12 months
Part Time
22.2 hours
Please note this is a part time post and the salary for this position will be pro-rata.
Please note this is a fixed term post for 6 months. Where a post only has temporary funding and an existing member of NHS Lanarkshire staff wishes to apply, this will be treated as a secondment. The employee MUST already have written agreement from their line manager to be released on a secondment before applying for the post.
Location and Working Pattern
This role will be based in Pharmacy, University Hospital Monklands but travel between the three acute sites is expected..
The working pattern for this role Mon-Fri; 9:00-5:00 pro rata.

From 1 April 2024, the working week for NHS Agenda for Change workers in Scotland will be reduced. Full-time hours will reduce from 37.5 to 37 hours (pro rata for part-time staff) without loss of earnings.
