The role is extremely varied and draws on a diverse range of skills. The work will be dynamic, often with short deadlines. Working closely with teammates and other colleagues you can expect to be involved in any of the following:

  • Supporting senior advisors to provide guidance to operations staff relating to the regulation of manufacturing industries (Cement Lime and Minerals, Chemicals, Food and Drink, Metals, Paper Pulp and Textiles).
  • Working closely with Government, other regulators, NGOs, industry and trade bodies
  • Gathering data and information to help set standards for pollution control
  • Supporting the team with data and knowledge management
  • Co-ordinating provision of training and development for operational colleagues
  • There are opportunities to get involved with incident management when pollution incidents occur. We're a dispersed team and work with a wide range of technical and project teams across the country. We're part of the Environment and Business (E&B) Directorate. We inform and deliver the government's key environmental objectives; using evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation we influence policy and legislation, facilitate, and enhance integrated delivery and, by building trust in the Environment Agency, secure resources to do more for the environment.

    Key skills you should look to demonstrate in your capability answers include:
  • Your ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work
  • An engineering or scientific background
  • understanding of the nature and impact of pollution
  • understanding of the technologies available for controlling / reducing industrial pollution and the regulatory framework which drives their uptake
  • ability to collate, manage and interpret complex scientific data and information
  • ability to develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external contacts
  • good organisational skills and ability to use MS office and other IT tools
  • experience in supporting the delivery of team activities
  • ability to prioritise and deliver work efficiently and to a high quality
  • written and verbal communication skills.
