Full Job Description

Do you want to help shape the future of freshwater and migratory fisheries management and regulation across England? At the Environment Agency we aspire for inclusivity to thrive in our workforce. We embrace equal opportunities and flexible work arrangements, ensuring everyone can contribute and succeed. In this role you will manage and contribute to a small team of experts who lead on current and future approaches to our core responsibilities on fisheries regulation, compliance and incident response. These activities are essential to maintain and develop healthy and sustainable fisheries and, as a result, play a significant role in bringing benefits to people and supporting nature's recovery. You will lead and manage work and projects, delivering directly and through others. Our work is highly varied providing oversight, support and assurance of operational delivery, leading and delivering new initiatives and working closely with Defra and multiple stakeholders and partners to achieve
shared outcomes for fish and fisheries. The team leads on high profile work including delivery of measures to support the management and recovery of the European eel, how we best deliver our fisheries enforcement responsibilities, improving our understanding and ability to respond to fisheries incidents in a changing climate and enhancing how we regulate the management of fisheries to minimise the impacts caused by invasive non-native species and fish disease. This role will require the development and maintenance of effective relationships with teams and functions across the Environment Agency, Defra family, Natural Resources Wales and the multiple customers and partners who all have an interest in the management of our fisheries. You will shape and support the planning of strategic priorities, to inform business decisions and provide a sound basis from which to communicate with and influence internal and external partners.

The team

The Environment & Business fisheries team provides the strategic lead for fisheries work across the Environment Agency. As well as supporting operational delivery, we work closely with core Defra, other Arm's Length Bodies and fisheries stakeholders and partners on a range of topics spanning fisheries regulation, compliance, management, incident response and planning. We are a dispersed team who meet regularly, both virtually and face to face, to ensure we work effectively and support each other.

You should have considerable experience within the fields of fisheries regulation, compliance, or incident response where the Environment Agency has a role, including both the technical and legislative elements of this work. Experience in programme/project management would also be beneficial, as is a relevant degree or equivalent experience. We are looking for someone who can bring leadership, experience and can critically assess current practice and identify future opportunities. You will recognise and embrace the need to work with a wide range of interested parties, helping to steer all towards successful outcomes. You will be able to communicate in a clear and engaging way across diverse audiences to support our goals.
