Full Job Description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

This is a fixed term position until October 2025.

The shift pattern for this position is Core CAMHS hours.

(Please note the salary is Pro Rata) for part time hours.

We are looking for committed and enthusiastic Assistant Child Psychotherapists to work in CAMHS in Glasgow GGC and support the delivery of psychoanalytical psychotherapy to children, young people and their families, whilst also building core clinical competencies for further child psychotherapy training.

We are offering three part time (0.5 WTE) positions for a 12 month fixed term (1.5 WTE in total). Each position will be based in one of the CAMHS teams in Glasgow GG&C. These will be West Glasgow, East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire.

You will:

  • Get to work alongside a range of disciplines including Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Mental Health Nurses, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Psychotherapists.
  • Have a previous professional training and have current registration with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or Professional Standards Authority (PSA), and have completed or are in the process of completing the masters in Psychoanalytic Observation and Reflective Practice: Therapeutic Work with Children and Young People course at Human Development Scotland or its equivalent.
  • Have a strong commitment to pursuing training to become a child psychoanalytical psychotherapist.

The Child Psychotherapy Team in Glasgow offers a range of opportunities to develop, including high quality supervision, reflective group discussions and psychotherapy training days. We will support your career development by agreeing a collaborative development plan and supporting you to develop your knowledge and skills. This post focuses on the core CAMHS competencies which are a prerequisite of the Association for Child Psychotherapists training escalator.

You will be supervised by a Principal or Consultant Child Psychotherapist to develop clinical skills and support the delivery of an evidence based, empathic and effective psychoanalytic psychotherapy service. As we are a learning organisation you may also have supervised supervision with a more junior member of the team who is developing their own supervision practice.

Your work may include:

  • The use of observational skills to inform understanding and practice, assessment and interventions for example, assisting with carrying out psychoanalytical child and adolescent perspectives, supervised individual therapy and family work;
  • Writing accessible reports;
  • Offering support to care co-ordinators and feedback based on observations and understanding; making a contribution to the overall care plan.
  • Your developing knowledge and practice using psychoanalytic, child development and attachment models as well as core generic CAMHS competencies such as crisis intervention, risk assessment and safety planning, managing referrals, generic mental health assessments and interventions.

Our vision is for a happier and more hopeful life for everyone in our communities and our staff work hard to deliver the very best care for the people who use our services. All individuals regardless of race, age, disability, ethnicity, nationality, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, religion or belief, marriage and civil partnership are encouraged to apply for this post. Please see job description and person specification.

We would be happy to discuss the job role in more detail or answer any questions.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.  This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.  This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.  However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.

Candidates should provide original and authentic responses to all questions within the application form. The use of artificial intelligence (AI), automated tools, or other third-party assistance to generate, draft, or significantly modify responses is strongly discouraged. By submitting your application, you confirm that all answers are your own work, reflect your personal knowledge, skills and experience, and have not been solely produced or altered by AI or similar technologies.

Failure to comply with this requirement may result in your application being withdrawn from the application process.
