Full Job Description
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.
Applications are invited for a 0.6wte Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to work in our busy, innovative, friendly and supportive team in Paediatric Psychology based at the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow. This is an exciting opportunity for candidates with a passion for working with children and young people with physical health conditions.
We welcome applications from newly qualifying Psychologists. The post will be based at the Royal Hospital for Children on the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital campus, Glasgow.
The RHC is one of the largest childrens hospitals in the UK and is the regional and national center for several medical specialties for children and young people across Scotland. The successful candidate will work with both outpatients and inpatients. Psychologists are part of a large supportive psychology team structure of around 20 Psychologists with many opportunities for collaborative working and service development. Psychologists work closely as embedded members of medical specialty teams and this post is to support the Chest Wall Service.
In addition to direct clinical work, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to support multidisciplinary clinical colleagues across the whole hospital through consultation on psychosocial care; contributing to MDT and ward meetings; and teaching and training activities including delivery of the NHS Education for Scotland TIPS-PH (Training in Psychological Skills Paediatric Healthcare) modules. There will also be opportunities for research and audit.
Paediatric Psychology work closely with the other acute mental health/psychology teams within the hospital (Paediatric Liaison Psychiatry; Paediatric Neuropsychology; and Maternity and Neonatal Psychological Interventions). These posts form part of a network of over 100 psychologists in Specialist Childrens Services in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and a much larger psychology workforce across the care groups in the health board. The service has strong links with both the Glasgow University Doctoral training in Clinical Psychology and the Edinburgh University MSc course in Applied Psychology for Children and Young People and the successful candidate will be expected to provide supervision to both doctoral and MSc trainees. You must have a Doctoral level of qualification in Clinical Psychology or Counselling Psychology and be registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) to be eligible to apply for this post. You will be expected to have completed (or we will support completion of) Supervision training.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
Candidates should provide original and authentic responses to all questions within the application form. The use of artificial intelligence (AI), automated tools, or other third-party assistance to generate, draft, or significantly modify responses is strongly discouraged. By submitting your application, you confirm that all answers are your own work, reflect your personal knowledge, skills and experience, and have not been solely produced or altered by AI or similar technologies. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in your application being withdrawn from the application process.
